Anyone here drive for Uber or Lyft? Or DoorDash, Instacart, Postmates, UberEats, Grubhub, etc.?

I made this post earlier but Kinja. Anyway.

DoorDash and Lyft are in my town now. Those are the only two, so far, as we’re only a town of 90,000 or so people. Not small but not a big city by any means.

Just wondering what it’s like and if the cost outweighs the income.

My city is so small that the mileage and wear and tear on my car would be minimal. I already only average 700 miles a month or so, so I have some wiggle room before I’d even hit the average mileage for an American driver.

Pic of my 6 for good measure. It’d be the one doing delivery duty. Not the Sunbird, of course.

It really comes down to cost per mile. If you know what it is and can make more than that, then go for it. I’ve heard right around $0.50/ mile for cost is a good bench mark for running costs, that includes all costs. I know in my 3, it’s ~$0.60/mile.

I’d be interested  to know if anyone here has their employer directly pay for their gas or car too.

I get $0.65 /mile if I choose to use my car, w hich easily covers gas/maintenance, and extra value on top. As long as it's not raining, I'll drive the Miata over a work vehicle

I think that the issue here is that it’s not the usual wear and tare; you’ll have to deal with people with a lot of luggage, questionable hygiene habits, and probably very, very dirty shoes.

You'll also be dealing with a lot of rush hour traffic and urban core streets which are slower and will probably dent your fuel economy... Specially if passengers like AC (hint: they do!)

Whenever I carry passengers-specifically my sisters who do not give a flying fuck about my car- I need to be all over it in order to keep it clean.

I know a lot of Uber drivers who get the thickest possible Weather-tech style mats, and also try to clean the car as often as possible in order to catch the problems early on and avoid smells. In general these drivers I mention also only use their cars when they work because of tax writeoffs... all egedly.

If I ever end up needing to transport people for a living, I’m reinstalling the backseat cage in my car.

I did drive for a delivery service once upon a time. It wasn’t the easiest life, but I was able to time it such that I could make a pretty decent part-time money between jobs aiming for lunch window.

On one hand, it’s going to accelerate wear on your car. Expect your fuel economy to nose dive and other parts to start breaking (I wore out an ignition switch, but that was already faulty to begin with). However, it did make me a more fearless driver who knew the city like the back of my hand and I got to see a police chase in real time , so I guess it was worth it in a way.

Keep all your receipts as well as a bo ttle of spray-on carpet cleaner and a roll of paper towels in your car.

I’ve decided I’m not doing anything with passengers. I’ll stick with food if I do anything.

Well, late hour deliviers mean it’s more likely you’d encounter drunk drivers... but otherwise a safer choice when it comes to your car surviving.

You could also load up on podcasts while you work.

I can write off basically everything I do. But they don't pay for my gas.

Gas, coffee, equipment... Hell, if I’m an asshole I could also write off tolls and have everyone wait for me as I dictate my taxpayer ID to the toll booth operator.

I get some prorated “allowance” for my commute to and from the office, else my employer covers 100% for driving pertaining to my actual job. Company vehicle, mind you.

For me, it's DoorDash. I've been dashing long enough to have some stories from the Impreza.

Be prepared to not get any/great tips. To me these services seem more frustrating than its worth.

It could be interesting to see what it’s like in your area, but I wouldn’t expect too much.

I briefly considered DoorDashing with the Vette to see what it was like in general.

I did have a thought that the Lexus that I traded in to buy the Vette, I could have kept and Turo’ed out, which was an idea that came too late.

The one thing that keeps me out of Uber/Lyft consideration is puke. And every driver complains about door slammers.

I’ve seen some Youtube videos where the vlogger tries to give an honest depiction of those types of gig jobs. He drives an old pathfinder that gets 15mpg on a good day so he never really makes any money. If you are willing to work for a couple of bucks below minimum wage to make money to cover the car payment and gas it’s probably a good thing to keep you afloat between more solid jobs.

I delivered flowers for the local florist when they had overflow and it was decent money. At that time you got paid for the delivery and a decent tip (because ppl are normally when they get flowers and the are free). Pizza delivery when free earns tips too. I think the person ordering through Doordash and Uber eats has to pay a delivery fee so they are less likely to tip.

From what I’ve read, you r starter will see excessive wear, a lot of delivery people leave their car running to avoid that. Opens the opportunity for theft. Your insurance may not cover your car while you are working.

Food for thought.

I get reimbursed if I take my car somewhere. It’s frowned upon but if you have a good reason, they are fine with it. Some where around 55-60 cents per mile.
